Internet Domain Name Services

Just what exactly is this thing called a Domain Name and why is it important today and becoming indispensable to companies and organizations as we move into the future.

An Internet domain (or domain name) is a unique (one of a kind) address that is used to identify a company or organization on the Internet. Unless you've been living in isolation for the past 24 months you can see these "domain names" showing up more frequently in the press, on TV, and in advertisements. This unique address is often referred to as a URL (uniform resource locator).

As an example, a well known company that has a registered domain name with the Internet has an address, URL, or domain name of www.ford.com (Ford Motor Company).

Before a company, organization or individual can use a unique domain name on the information super highway (for marketing or other purposes) this name must be registered with the Internet (InterNIC).

Once registered your companies domain name would be known as "www.your~company.com".

Does your company need a Domain Name ?

You do not need your own unique domain name to have a presence (HomePage) on the Net. Internet Service Providers (ISP) and other online services provide the means by which you can utilize their domain name to host your page.. Even if you have a registered name, you must have a computer system (web server) to have your page hosted on the Net (your own hardware or through an some service provider). IBS can deliver these web service capabilities today.

Why your company needs a Domain Name :

Domain names are rapidly becoming a means by which a company can strongly enhance their identity or provide a method of branding their products or services. Companies are increasingly looking at their domain name as a prized asset that they want to protect in the same manner that they covet their logo, trademark, jingle, or brand name.

In the Internet domain name game, if you snooze, you lose.

Domain Names are swiftly being gobbled up (registered) at a rate of about 10,000 names per month. Once allotted, this unique address is yours forever provided you pay your $50 per year registration fee with the Internet organization (InterNIC) (which is charted by the National Science Foundation) . Over time all of the good names will be gone (puff).

Even a name that might uniquely be identified with your company name, product, or service could be assigned to someone or some company other than your own (if they register before you do).

Domain Names need to be Registered and Setup:

There are a large number of Web Publishing companies and consultants that offer registration services. It is recommended that small companies (or individuals) submit their registration request through these service providers.

Prior to registering your name with the InterNIC you must have a system (Name Server) so that a valid Internet Protocol (IP) address can be assigned to you. Most domain names that are present on the Net today obtain their Name Server through an Internet Service Provider (ISP) who has a connected system to the Net. The other option is to deploy and maintain your own computer system. For most of us this is not a viable or cost effective means of gaining an Internet presence (nor is it a trivial task for the uninformed).

Once registered a domain name such as "www.fun.com" could then mapped to an IP address that is represented by a group of numbers separated by dots (i.e., 168.37.87.15). As you can see it's much easier to remember a familiar name to find a page on the Net, than a meaningless number that has absolutely no relationship to the information associated with it.

Navigating through the Internet bureaucracy and submitting the correct forms for registration are best left to those who can accomplish it quickly and accurately the first time. Working through an ISP or consultant, your domain name can be confirmed within 48 hours and within two weeks your company can have it's unique address secured and available for use in all your marketing activities.

After registration your HomePage can be hosted and available to the Internet community under an address similar to;

"http://www.your~company.com"

Services that host your Domain Name also allow for Email to be forwarded to your site under a number of alias that are configurable.

Examples of some typical mailboxes are;

This allows you to organize any mail correspondence by subject and allows different groups or individuals in your company to be assigned a mailbox.

Domain Names are Economical……

Internet Business Services can provide all of the above at a very attractive price. For a one time setup fee and a small monthly hosting and maintenance charge you can have your own Domain Name. (This does not include the annual fee ($50) collected by the InterNIC).
